Mission

The Lauderhill CRA’s mission is to encourage new investment, job creation, and housing options in urban areas that were blighted by inequity, non-conforming uses, and lack of infrastructure.

Background and Overview

The Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) operates under Florida Statutes Chapter 163, Part III. It is a separate legal entity, with the City Commission acting as its Board of Commissioners. The Mayor chairs the Board, and various city officials hold key positions within the CRA. The CRA is supported by staff in the City’s two redevelopment areas. Florida Statutes 163 and the Community Redevelopment Plans of each district outline procedures for prioritizing development, reconstruction, and rehabilitation.

The Redevelopment Act allows municipalities to establish a community redevelopment agency if there are slum or blighted areas within their jurisdiction. In 2004, the Board of County Commissioners delegated authority to the City of Lauderhill to create the Lauderhill Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and develop a Community Redevelopment Plan. The Lauderhill CRA was established by City Ordinance in August 2004. The Plan was approved by the City Commission in September 2005 and by the County in December 2005, specifically for the State Road 7 CRA District. The Central CRA Plan was approved in September 2006 and authorized by the County in October 2006.

CRA programs and initiatives are primarily funded by property tax increments. When property values increase within a community redevelopment area, tax increment revenues are generated. The CRA invests these revenues into programs and projects aligned with each district’s community redevelopment plan. These include business attraction and retention, infrastructure development, community facilities, infill housing, and other endeavors that aim to improve the environment and foster community pride.
